World War II and incident in Pearl Harbor
After I graduated from high school, I applied for Air force and did not attend college. The reason was not only I felt uncomfortable for paying expensive college tuition but also I respected pilot. When I was a senior at high school on early 1940, a group of American pilots came to my school. They talked about the pride being in U.S Air force and that was attractive enough for many of the high schoolers. Dillan McGuire, one of the pilots, talked about his family and his duty as the elder of his family. It was similar to my circumstances. He became my dream. I even got a sign. (James H)
I enjoyed my job as a pilot apprentice despite I did not get paid much. On my way back from the Air force academy today, I saw many people starving. They held the placards that showed about disemployment and starvation. They were dirty and looked displeased. It did not seem realistic until I arrived at my house. Everything was perfect for me until then.
Since my father manages several factories, my family lived pretty decently. When I arrived at my house, I saw my father was throwing empty alcohol bottles everywhere. My mom with my younger sisters and brother were screaming and sobbing. The first thing I realized was not that the bottles were flying everywhere but the fact that my father was at the house. He should have been working hard on his factory now. According to what I eavesdropped from my parents’ conversation a month ago, they contemplated about bad economy because it directly affected his factories. He eventually reduced major parts of his factories. It seemed that the worldwide depression was striking at my house too.
With much of the physical force, I barely made him stop throwing things. He just left the house after he was calmed. I heard from my mom later that his only left factory was closed due to U.S’s embargo on Asia’s imperialist country: Japan. The country’s name was unfamiliar to me at the time. However, I understood that my country cut the major trades of steel and gasoline on Japan because she did not stop invading China. It made my father’s factories collapse because his factories produced steels. Japan was one of his major consumers. I did not know that Japan was such a huge market for steel and gasoline. Wasn't Asia nonindustrial and poor?
We sighed. Now I had to support my entire family; my father never came back.
Something, that should not have happened, occurred yesterday. Japan attacked pearl harbor and totally destroyed American navy. U.S.A declared war on Japan today. I and my co-worker, Charles W. Sweeney, became furious about this sudden attack. We thought it was unfair for Japan attacking innocent soldiers without any declaration of war.
Charles and I had finished training and were now working on U.S. Army Air Corps. We used to have deep conversation about worldwide tension. Many of European nations were already devastated by the war. Thus the world was focusing on America’s decision as our decision could change the tide of the war. Since we decided to participate in the Ally’s side, it would turn out to be great loss to Axis powers. Japan played major part in our decision. She might have expected U.S to back down by the attack. But it eventually backfired.
As a American pilot, I could not overlook what Japan did to my country and my friends. I heard that Japan used suicide-planes that self-destructed with many American ships. It was truly shocking to hear killing oneself for his or her own country. Maybe they did have more faith in their country than we had. It caused great stir on us. However, we were also one of the proud U.S Air force soldiers. I did not want to forgive cruel and malicious acts of Japan.
I thought the war should be finished soon. I could not stand all the unfairness I saw on the war front. Since Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, the Japanese dwelling in U.S had to suffer the consequence. I heard from Charles that Japanese-Americans would soon be sent to isolated camp in west coast. Although I opposed the war to Charles, ironically, the war in Europe helped my family. The U.S was enjoying the wartime economy. The unemployment rate decreased significantly and The Second New Deal ended due to the war. Moreover, my father’s factories started to operate again. My brother managed them these days. Everyone knew that even Britain and France had to owe a lot of money to U.S in order to supply their war-fronts.
I got assigned on supporting U.S army in pacific ocean. I saw aircraft carrier today. It was huge and enormous. I would ride this and be carried into the center of the war. I gulped because there were many accidents for pilots on the carriers. It was so dangerous that many pilots disliked taking-off from the carrier. I might die achieving nothing. I put cross on my neck though I did not have much belief in god. I borrowed it from Charles. He said, “Bring it back.” (Peter Suh).

The allied force used to show inferiority as Japan dominated the French in Indochina, the British in Hong Kong, Malaya and Singapore, the Dutch in the East Indies, and the Americans in the Philippine Islands. Moreover, U.S.A used to have difficulties in supporting wars in both Europe and Pacific. Therefore, the triumph in the Battle of Midway was a great relief.
I participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal. It was a bloody battles over islands. We defeated Japan several times but had to retreat from Japanese armed force too. Guadalcanal is part of the Solomon Islands which lie to the north-eastern approaches of Australia. If the Japanese captured the island, she could cut off the sea route between Australia and America. If we controlled the island, we would be better able to protect Australia from Japanese invasion and could also protect the Allied build-up in Australia that would act as a springboard for a major assault on the Japanese. Although many soldiers fought on the ground, the bombing from the air was crucial on this battle.
Fortunately, this bloody battles were almost at its end. We would launch final attack on Japanese base tomorrow. I saw three carriers around me. They were magnificent. Seeing these vessels and being one of them, I felt that I had been reaching the climax of my life. Tomorrow, everything would come to the end.
Yesterday, I saved a man from an island. The captives were dead silent but I saw some Japanese guys hitting one person. He was also captivated as a Japanese soldier but there were little differences between him and other Japanese. I had to look carefully to distinguish them. He had bigger jaw and did not have projecting teeth like an usual Japanese. I saved him from the captives and brought him into my carrier. Later, I got his information by the help of a translator. His name was Kim Man-Sook. My pronunciation made him laugh. He was not Japanese and he said he was from Korea which I had never heard of. He said it became a colony of Japan. I felt pity for him. I asked one of my subordinate to make him work in the carrier. He would have been killed if he stayed in the prisoner camp. (James P)
I wrote the last entry of my diary after everything finished. I had not slept for more than a week. My hands were shaking now. I could not figure out whether it was caused by lack of sleep or by the terror I had suffered in these days. I thought the badge, that qualified me as a U.S Air Force, was stained with blood. Of course, it was my illusion. Nothing had happened to me personally. In fact, I should be delighted. My country, my side and my people won the World War. However, the fact did not make me happy. Instead it made me unable to sleep; it would eventually lead me to nightmare.
My pride over U.S.A had collapsed. What it had done was more serious than Pearl Harbor or maybe the Holocaust. The "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" were dropped in each of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Although it was a bomb, it completely destroyed the city. The reasons for dropping those horrible bombs were simple: to end the war. If the war had continued, it would have caused more casualties on our side. But I could not forget the people who literally evaporated in those cities. Although U.S gave final warning to Japanese emperor and despite Japan ignored it, killing millions of citizens were the most inhuman acts in World War II.
In fact, I heard this terrible news from my close friend, Charles Donald Albury. Charles was the co-pilot of the airplane which dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. I ran to him just after he arrived on August 9, 1945. He did not say much. He said he saw a bomb falling with a parachute and saw a mushroom cloud after a few seconds. It was too bright for him to see the details at the time. However, he did remember and felt guilt about that he actually thought the cloud was magnificent and “beautiful.” (Gene)
“What? How could you say it was beautiful?” I yelled at him with all of my anger. I thought he did not think deeply about turning millions of people into ash. But his face with solemn eyes was similar to that of the philosopher. He seemed to be in deep agony. I did not question him further.
The person who came after Charles Albury was Charles Sweeney. I knew he was up to something these days. I just gave him back the cross without saying anything. I left the hangar and headed to my room slowly. Everything was messy, even my reasons for participating in the war and risking my life. (Peter Suh)
The cities were important targets for U.S for their great industrial activities. In other words, buildings must have been constructed closely together and many people must have lived there. Was it the war or science that caused this tragedy? When I looked up the sky in my room, it started to rain. I thought the cloud resembled the one from the atomic bomb.

Japan has enjoyed 100 days of victories over several colonial powers in East Asia, the French in Indochina, the British in Hong Kong, Malaya and Singapore (soon Burma), the Dutch in the Dutch East Indies, and the Americans in the Philippine Islands. Write about your feelings in regards to any one of the aforementioned victories, what it means for you, or your nation (or all three).
The Americans have fought hard battles through out the South Pacific. Their island hopping attack has brought their bombers within range of all Japanese cities. The Japan's Imperial Army is being beaten in the Philippines. All of its South-east Asian areas of occupation are being harassed by bombing and guerrilla fighting. Their shipping supply lines are nearly cut off completely. Okinawa is finally taken. The bomb is used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The USSR enters the war against the Japanese. The Pacific War ends.
Each entry should be at least 350 words. Again, be able to connect with at least one other person in one of your entries.
